Winter's cold air brings many concerns for the responsible pet owner. Here are a few tips to help you and your pet survive the winter in comfort.
Don't leave your pet outside for long periods of time. Wind chill makes days colder than actual temperature readings.
Be extra careful when walking your dog near frozen lakes, rivers or ponds. Your dog could slip or jump in and be seriously injured.
Groom pets regularly. Your pet needs a well-groomed coat to keep him properly insulated. Long-haired pets need their paw hairs clipped so that snow can be easily removed.
Towel or blow-dry your pet if he gets wet from rain or snow. It's important to clean and dry the paws, too. Ice melt products irritate paws. Keep a damp rag and towel by the door. A little petroleum jelly may soften the pads and prevent cracking.
Don't leave your pet in the car. It gets too cold, and leaving the engine running causes dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
Beware of antifreeze. It is attractive to pets and other animals. It is highly toxic. Always clean up spills.
Cats love warm places, so if there's a chance a cat sleeps in your garage, pound on the hood of your car before starting the engine, an be observant of automatic door openers.
Dog houses should have canvas flaps over the door and have cedar bedding.
Animals cannot eat snow, so provide fresh water at least twice per day. Both cats and dogs need a steady supply of nourishment to maintain body heat.
