The Jensens told me of the following remarkable experience which happened to Jay Jensen as he was going out to the farm to check on the three horses they kept with their herd of cattle. Every evening when Jay checked on the horses, they always came when they heard him call. However, one particular evening none of the horses came. Finally, his son's little quarter horse, Rawhide, came part of the way to meet him, but turned around and ran back into the pasture where the brush was very thick. When Jay called a second and third time, Rawhide came part way again, then circled around and ran back into the pasture. Jay decided to follow Rawhide.
Rawhide ran ahead, turning around often to see if Jay was following. When the horse neared the large wooded area, he went behind a tree and started back into the brush. He hadn't gotten very far when Jay spotted an older horse caught in a barbed wire fence. She was caught in the corner of a fence row where a wire was sticking out and she was bleeding profusely from the hind quarters, which were tangled in the fence. She looked as though she had been there for at least a day. Jay was able to unroll the wire to free her.
The most remarkable part of the entire experience was the reaction of Rawhide. As Jay was freeing the injured horse, Rawhide put his head on the back of the trapped mare and continued to make low moaning sounds as he watched Jay work to free her. As soon as the older mare was free, both of the horses took off through the brush and ran out into the open pasture like two little children, while Jay phoned for medical assistance.
