The
Dog That Went To Church
Outside the church the
dogs were waiting
Outside the magic door they knew
They could not enter. They were waiting
For their masters to come through.
They discussed among
each other
How it was that only here,
In this place, their owners left them.
Would not tolerate them near.
Suddenly their chatter
halted
As with popping eyes they saw
How a great big grey police dog
Calmly walked in through the door.
|
"He'll be kicked
out," they predicted
"Watch and see him howl with pain,"
But though eagerly they waited,
They didn't see the dog again.
He was sitting at the
alter
With a dignity unmatched
While his little master, kneeling
Received Communion as he watched.
Then the dog with gentle
movements
Led the child back to his seat,
And later, when the Mass was over
Out again into the street.
The other dogs there
watched in silence,
Moved aside to let them pass,
They understood. To aid the sightless
Even DOGS may go to Mass.
