ABOUT DR. STEINBERG...

Dr. Dietrich Steinberg, D.V.M.Born in Germany, Dr. Steinberg always had a great love for animals. childhood visits to his uncle's farm are still treasured memories to him. He attended grade school and high school in Zeulenroda in former East Germany. The then-existing difficult political times in East Germany limited his educational opportunities, therefore in 1957, he left East Germany at the age of seventeen illegally through Berlin. After spending some time in refugee camps, he returned to high school in Giessen, West Germany.

In 1958, his great childhood dream came true as he was able to enroll at the Veterinary School of the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen. In 1960, he transferred to the Veterinary School of Hannover where he graduated in 1963. Upon graduation, he participated in an exchange internship program in Finland at the University of Helsinki. In 1964 and 1965, he was with the Munich Veterinary School of Germany where he wrote his thesis on liver diseases and received the Dr. Med. Vet Degree in February of 1966. The same year, he obtained an internship in pathology at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, NY. In July of 1967, he began an internship in large animal medicine and surgery at Purdue University Veterinary School, Lafayette, Indiana.

From 1968 to 1970, he worked in a very high-quality animal hospital in Basel, Switzerland, receiving special training in orthopedic surgery. Returning to the United States in June of 1970, he worked at the Humane Society in St. Louis, Missouri and started his own animal clinic in 1973.

Throughout his life, Dr. Steinberg has maintained his love and caring attitude for animals. Continuing education in the form of reading, attending seminars, visiting other veterinary clinics and colleges is still his most favored pastime.

Dr. Steinberg sees in each animal a unique and special being with its own character and feelings. He believes that each of his patients' lives have certain spiritual qualities of its own. He sees creation as a beautiful gift of God and he shows great respect for all its different forms. Visits to the national parks in North America, Europe, Australia and East Africa have been some of the most enjoyable events of his life.

Dr. Steinberg started the West County Animal Clinic which continues to flourish and grow. He can be reached at the Clinic in Manchester, Missouri or by calling 314-227-3505.
